Vertigo/Dizziness/BPPV

If you have the feeling that you or the objects around you are moving when they are not, or you feel a spinning or swaying sensation, then you may have vertigo.

DO NOT IGNORE THESE SYMPTOMS.

Vertigo is a symptom of an underlying condition. It’s important for you to get treated in order to find out what is causing the issue. There are two main types of vertigo. “Central vertigo” affects the balance centers of the brain and spinal cord. Common causes of this condition are stroke, MS, Parkinson’s Disease, or traumatic head injury. See your doctor right away if you have dizziness or vertigo related to any of these conditions.

“Peripheral vertigo” is caused by problems in the inner ear or the vestibular nerve, which connects the inner ear and the brain. This is the most common type of vertigo, and has less serious causes. The most common one is a condition called Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV).

BPPV occurs when small calcium crystals called “otoconia” get trapped in the semicircular canal of the ear. Symptoms are triggered by head movements such as looking upward, bending over, or rolling over in bed. Here in our office, we diagnose BPPV using a simple positional test.

The good news is that BPPV is generally fairly easy to treat. We specialize in a treatment called the “Epley Maneuver.” One treatment is usually effective. Occasionally, a second treatment may be necessary. Rarely, if you have recurring BPPV, we can teach you how to safely do the Epley Maneuver at home.
