One of the most common conditions we treat is spine-related pain, particularly in the neck or low back. Sometimes the pain begins acutely, as a result of a strain or other injury. Or it can come on slowly, over weeks, months or even years, until suddenly you realize that you haven’t had a pain-free day in a long time. You may not be able to pinpoint when or how this chronic pain began. If this sounds familiar, you’ve come to the right place.
Medications such as prescription opioids do nothing to actually eliminate your pain. They simply mask the symptoms by disrupting the pain receptors in your brain. This provides short term relief, but not a long-term solution. Once the medication is stopped, the pain “returns”, having never actually left in the first place. At this point, injections or surgery may be suggested.
Physical therapy takes a completely different approach to this type of pain. Our therapists will perform a detailed evaluation to determine the exact cause of your pain and develop an appropriate treatment plan. Your first few visits will be focused on quick pain relief. Once your pain is under control, your treatment will be expanded to include therapeutic stretches to relieve stiffness and increase range of motion, and exercises designed to strengthen the muscles in your neck, core, and back. You’ll also be provided with ergonomic techniques for taking care of your spine during daily activities such as lifting, working at a desk, or driving.
This combined approach, with the therapist and patient working together, is the best way to achieve lasting pain relief, and to prevent pain from returning in the future.
