Pre/Post Joint Replacement/Surgery

If you have an upcoming joint replacement surgery, your doctor may recommend “pre-hab.” Pre-hab is physical therapy done in the weeks just prior to your surgery. Properly executed, this can dramatically decrease the recovery time after surgery. It focuses on strengthening the muscles that surround the joint that is going to be replaced. For example, you will have a much easier time recovering from a knee replacement if your thigh muscles are already strong and flexible.

Even with pre-hab, you will still need PT after surgery. It’s very important to keep the joint mobile – in a proper, controlled manner – while you heal. Without skilled physical therapy, you may end up with continued pain, stiffness, and a loss in your range of motion. Recovering from joint replacement surgery isn’t easy. That’s why your doctor has sent you to physical therapy because it’s our specialty!
